Mac security audit: what to check, and what a score cannot tell you
The short answer
A Mac security audit reviews configuration and exposure. Start by checking software updates, disk encryption, network access, sharing, app permissions and startup items. Record what you could actually inspect. A passed checklist or high score does not prove that a Mac is free of malware.
Check encryption and network exposure
Review FileVault in System Settings and understand how you would recover access if you lost your login credentials. Apple documents the encryption and recovery choices. Keep recovery information private and follow your organization’s policy on a managed Mac. [1]
Review the firewall and the sharing services you have enabled. Apple describes the firewall as a control on unwanted incoming connections. It does not replace decisions about which services and applications should be reachable. Change only settings you understand, especially on a Mac used for remote access. [2]
Review permissions and startup items
Look at applications with access to sensitive data or powerful capabilities. Consider whether each permission is still needed. For startup items, check the owning app and file location rather than assuming an unfamiliar name is malicious.
Systune’s audit groups 92 configuration checks into eight categories. It includes FileVault, System Integrity Protection, firewall and sharing settings, plus selected background-item, plug-in and SSH configuration checks. Its startup inspector provides paths and code-signature information to help you investigate. An audit finding is a reason to inspect context, not proof of an intrusion.
Keep “unknown” separate from “passed”
A tool may lack permission to read a setting. A command may be unavailable on your version of macOS. Those outcomes do not establish that the configuration is healthy. Ask whether the audit shows coverage and which checks were skipped.
Systune keeps unreadable checks unknown and reports incomplete coverage. Its score summarizes the checks it can assess. It is not a security certification, a risk prediction or a reason to ignore a finding that matters to your situation.
Understand the antivirus boundary
Apple documents separate malware protections in macOS, including Gatekeeper and XProtect. Keep the operating system and its security protections current. A configuration audit does not substitute for threat detection. [3]
Systune has no malware-detection engine. CleanMyMac documents one, so our comparison calls that out as a genuine feature advantage. If you suspect compromise, use appropriate incident-response help and threat-detection tools rather than trying to clear the warning by changing a dashboard score.
Make changes deliberately
Read the effect of a proposed fix, confirm you have the necessary authorization and consider the impact on work, sharing and recovery. On managed devices, involve the administrator instead of overriding policy.
Systune combines its audit with reviewed cleanup and 300 macOS settings, with snapshots for preference changes. It is still in development. You can review the screenshots and join the waitlist; today, the built-in settings and Apple’s documentation are available without waiting for Systune.
Common questions
Is Systune antivirus software?
No. Systune audits security and privacy settings. It does not include a malware-detection engine and does not replace macOS protections or a dedicated antivirus product.
Does a perfect audit score mean my Mac is secure?
No. A score summarizes a defined set of checks. Coverage, permissions, software vulnerabilities and threats outside those checks still matter.
Why can a security check be unknown?
The tool may lack permission, a required command may be unavailable, or the setting may not be readable on that system. Unknown must not be treated as a pass.
